Breast lift

Mastopexy, or breast lift, raises and reshapes the breast without removing a significant amount of gland. The areola and nipple are repositioned, the gland is re-centred and excess skin is removed, for a higher, better-shaped bust. Dr Manon Belhoste performs this procedure in Marseille, at €5,000 to €6,500.

The procedure

Mastopexy removes excess skin, lifts and reshapes the gland, and repositions the areola and nipple while preserving their blood supply.

Dr Manon Belhoste performs mastopexy with three possible scar patterns: around the areola; around the areola, extended by a vertical line down to the crease under the breast; or an inverted T that also follows that crease. The pattern is decided during the consultation, based on excess skin, sagging (ptosis), tissue quality and the position of the areola.

Frequently asked questions

Mastopexy lifts and reshapes the breast, and repositions the areola, for a better-shaped and more proportionate bust. Not operating and accepting sagging (ptosis) remains an option. When the breast lacks mainly volume without significant excess skin, breast augmentation alone may be discussed, but it does not reliably correct marked sagging and may even worsen it. A mastopexy performed to correct isolated sagging is considered aesthetic surgery and is generally not covered by French national health insurance (Assurance Maladie).

Before mastopexy, Dr Manon Belhoste and the anaesthetist give instructions on fasting and medication. All regular medicines and supplements must be reported, including aspirin and medicines that affect clotting. Stopping smoking and all nicotine is required: nicotine increases the risk of poor healing and of skin necrosis. Any fever, cough, infection, skin lesion or recent breast abnormality must be reported. The prescribed breast imaging must be carried out.

In the first few days, swelling, bruising, a feeling of tightness and difficulty moving the arms are common. The prescribed scar care and sun protection should be followed. The areola and nipple may become less sensitive, more sensitive or differently sensitive. Recovery takes several months and is sometimes incomplete. Regular clinical follow-up may be offered during the first year. Breast screening recommended for your age remains necessary.

Mastopexy lifts and reshapes the breast without significant gland reduction. Breast reduction reduces the volume and weight of the breast by removing gland, fat and skin.

A mastopexy lifts the breast and retightens the skin, without adding volume. The breast may look larger because its proportions change. When the breast also lacks volume, particularly in the upper breast and cleavage, an augmentation with an implant or fat grafting may be suggested at the same time or later.

Combining a mastopexy and an augmentation, with implants or fat grafting, is possible in a combined procedure or in two stages. The details of the combined procedure are on the breast lift with augmentation page.

Breastfeeding remains possible when the gland, ducts and nerves are preserved, but it is never guaranteed.

The price of a mastopexy includes Dr Manon Belhoste's fees, follow-up consultations after the operation, anaesthesia and clinic fees at La Phocéanne polyclinic or Phénicia clinic.
