Liposuction

Liposuction corrects localised fat deposits and harmonises the proportions of the silhouette: it is neither a treatment for obesity nor a weight-loss method. Dr Manon Belhoste performs this procedure in Marseille, with or without re-injection of your own fat (fat grafting), for €1,800 to €6,000, depending on the areas.

The procedure

Liposuction removes fat from under the skin by suction, using cannulas inserted through small incisions of a few millimetres placed, as far as possible, in a fold or a discreet area.

Dr Manon Belhoste performs liposuction alone, or followed by re-injection of the fat removed, which is prepared and then re-injected in small amounts into another area of the body: the face, breasts, buttocks, hollows or irregularities, or a scar. The areas treated, chosen from among the abdomen, flanks, back, hips, thighs, knees, arms and under the chin, as well as the volume removed, are decided during the consultation, depending on how the fat is distributed, the quality of the skin and body shape.

The procedure and recovery

Dr Manon Belhoste performs liposuction at Polyclinique La Phocéanne and Clinique Phénicia in Marseille. The anaesthetist gives the fasting instructions before the procedure and advises whether you will need someone to accompany you home.

ParameterDetail
AnaesthesiaLocal, with or without sedation, or general. The choice depends on the number of areas, the volume treated and associated procedures.
DurationHighly variable, depending on the number of areas and the volume treated.
Hospital stayMost often, same-day discharge.
Compression garmentWorn for several weeks over the areas suctioned, to support them and limit swelling. The compression garment compresses the areas where fat is taken from, without pressing on the area where fat is re-injected. Pressure, massage and knocks on that area should be avoided for several weeks.
Exercise and strenuous activityStrenuous activity, lifting and sport are stopped for the first weeks. Light activities resume once pain and bruising have eased, and intense exercise after several weeks, with Dr Manon Belhoste's agreement.
ResultHidden by swelling at first, the result improves over the first weeks and is assessed after several months, once the swelling has gone down and the skin has tightened. Transferred fat that survives behaves like normal fat and then follows weight changes. Ageing, pregnancies and skin quality can also change the result.

Frequently asked questions

Liposuction reduces localised fat deposits and improves the body's contours, leaving small scars a few millimetres long. Its limitations relate to the skin and body shape: it does not directly treat cellulite, stretch marks or significant loose skin, and excess skin may require skin removal surgery. Perfect symmetry, a perfectly even surface and a precisely predictable volume cannot be guaranteed. The alternatives are no procedure, weight stabilisation and lifestyle and diet measures, certain non-surgical body-contouring techniques, or skin removal surgery in cases of significant loose skin.

Before liposuction, Dr Manon Belhoste examines the areas to be treated and takes medical photographs. Your weight should ideally be stable. No medicine containing aspirin should be taken in the 10 days before the procedure, unless medically advised otherwise, and anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs are never stopped without medical advice. All treatments, allergies, medical history, hormonal contraception and any personal or family history of blood clots must be reported. Stopping smoking and all nicotine is strongly recommended before and after the procedure, to reduce the risks of healing, skin and infection problems. The anaesthetist's fasting instructions must be followed strictly, and arrangements for getting home are made in advance.

After liposuction, gentle walking is recommended from the first days, with short steps and no effort. If the legs have been treated, they should be kept slightly raised at rest. Strenuous activity, lifting and sport are stopped for the first weeks. Swelling, bruising, aching and reduced sensation in the treated areas are usual and gradually ease. A pinkish fluid may drain from the small incisions in the first days. Dressings are changed if needed.

Liposuction aims to reduce localised fat deposits that resist lifestyle and diet measures. Your weight should ideally be stable before the procedure.

Liposuction reduces localised fat excess. It does not act directly on cellulite, stretch marks or significant loose skin. Excess skin may require skin removal surgery.

The fat removed can be prepared and then re-injected in small amounts into another area. Part of it is naturally reabsorbed, so the volume immediately after the operation does not match the final result. A further correction may be needed.
