Penile prosthesis

A penile prosthesis gives the reconstructed penis enough rigidity to allow penetration, when anatomy and function allow it. The penile prosthesis is one stage of genital reconstruction, offered after a phalloplasty. Dr Manon Belhoste performs this procedure in Marseille for French and international patients. Prices are still being negotiated with the relevant authorities and partner clinics.

The procedure

Dr Manon Belhoste places inflatable penile prostheses, which are made rigid when wanted. A pocket is created in the reconstructed penis and receives the implant, the pump is placed in a testicular implant and the reservoir under the navel.

The type of implant, its diameter, length and fixation method are decided during consultation, depending on the phalloplasty already performed, the thickness of the tissues, the course of the urethra and any existing scars.

The procedure and recovery

Frequently asked questions

A penile prosthesis gives the reconstructed penis a mechanical rigidity that makes penetration possible, when anatomy and function allow it. Its limits: the implant's duration cannot be guaranteed, and the prosthesis guarantees neither penetration, nor orgasm, nor any specific sexual satisfaction. It remains possible not to place a prosthesis, to postpone implantation, to use suitable external devices or to discuss another prosthetic strategy, depending on anatomical possibilities.

After a penile prosthesis, pain, oedema (swelling), bruising and a feeling of tightness are common in the first few days. The prosthesis and the reconstructed penis must not be moved excessively during healing. Sexual activity involving penetration is not allowed for several weeks, and resuming it requires Dr Manon Belhoste's agreement.

A penile prosthesis provides mechanical rigidity. Sexual function depends on the sensitivity of the reconstructed penis, its length, its stability, the reconstructed urethra, the covering tissues and individual factors.

The price of a penile prosthesis includes Dr Manon Belhoste's fees, follow-up consultations after the operation, anaesthesia, the prosthesis and clinic fees.
